Creating a business casual wardrobe allows extreme flexibility in where the clothing can be worn. Traditional professional wardrobes purchased strictly for office wear usually could only serve double duty at special occasions or for religious services. Today casual wardrobe can be worn on weekends, out to eat, and to social gatherings. Here are some tips to help create a business casual wardrobe for women.

Business Casual Dress Code

Visit the human resources department to find out the current business casual dress code. There may be jeans or denim allowed every day. Some companies allow jeans only on Fridays. Knowing the dress code opens up the possibilities of what can be worn. Try not to focus on favorite items of clothing that may be prohibited. It is possible to find an item that is similar in a different material or pattern that is acceptable.

Business Casual Clothing

Shop for business casual clothing on purpose. Think specifically about how many other pieces this new piece will match. If the new single item matches at least three other items it is a good buy. For example a great pinstripe or neutral color blazer with stretch may match a casual skirt, dress pants, and a shift dress.

Take the time to try on clothes in stores, or have measurements available when shopping online. Great clothing to invest in is casual shirts, blouses, blazers, casual pants, blue jean trousers, skirts, and day dresses. Try on clothing items purchased with other clothes in the closet to ensure it matches at least three other items in the wardrobe.

Casual Skirts

One or two casual skirts in a wardrobe can be a great alternative to wearing casual pants every day. Skirts that flatter and are modest are good choices. Consider buying neutral solid color skirts in khaki, black, purple, white, or navy blue.

Pencil skirts and a line skirts are easy to wear and can be worn for several seasons without appearing dated. Avoid wearing skirts that do not have any shape or structure. Always hem any skirts that hit the floor when sitting down.

Day Dresses

Day dresses in neutral colors and patterns that are in proportion to body size are wonderful for work. Adding large or skinny belts on the slimmest part of the waist helps bring the outfit together. Changing the accessories on a day dress or adding a jacket can create a whole new outfit. Wrap dresses, a line dresses, shift dresses that come to the knee are extremely versatile wardrobe pieces. Layer dresses with sweaters, vests, and cropped jackets.

Dresses that are extremely trendy may not be best for the workplace. Consider wearing tights or sheer hose to make dresses more modest. Look for the dress or skirt length when placing online orders or from print catalogs. Use a tape measure to determine where the hemline will rest when the dress is worn.

Adding new clothing each month or season is the best way to always have something nice to wear. Casually shopping during the week and picking up items that do not go with any other pieces may not be the best use of the clothing budget. Not dressing professional enough, even in a casual working environment can keep promotions from being granted. Use these tips to help find quality wardrobe pieces that will last for more than one season.
